Part-time job search tips for the traveller
More and more Australians travelling around or country are
taking the opportunity to work whilst they are on the move
according to Denise Love, General Manager, Russo Recruitment.
Mrs Love said many companies, particularly those in agriculture
areas, are tapping into the unique job market of the travelling
'grey nomads'.
"Many businesses throughout rural and regional Australia have
trouble retaining staff and see Grey nomads as a wonderful resource
due to their high levels of skills, experience and work ethic.
"In today's tech-savvy world, travellers should maximise their
employment opportunities by implementing some simple part-time job
search tips," Mrs Love said
- Utilise technology - Travel the country with an ipad or laptop,
with internet capabilities. This valuable research tool will inform
you about the types of industries and jobs available in particular
areas. You can also research the name of the local newspaper
and access an online version of their employment
section.
- Job Search Engines - Search engines such as www.greynomadsemployment.com
focus on part-time and hourly jobs and enable you to search for
part-time jobs in your location. In many cases, you will be able to
apply online. For picking, packing, pruning and other general
harvest work go to madec.edu.au and click on Harvest labour
Services
- Be Prepared. Have a voice mail system so potential employers
can get in touch with you. Know when you can work so have your
schedule available when you apply. Be prepared to be
interview on-the-spot and get a job immediately. Have the wardrobe
with you that you will require, ie dress for the position!
- Be Alert - Many jobs aren't advertised so visit with the local
Tourist Information Centre and ask for any employment opportunity
advice. Keep an eye out for "help wanted" signs in store
windows.
- Visit the local Job Services Australia office - Check with
Centrelink prior to travel to determine your eligibility for free
employment assistance. The website www.jobsearch.gov.au lists
the names and addresses of all Job Services Australia offices via
regions.
