Training key to success

Employers look for skills regardless of economic situation

If you're thinking 2012 might bring with it a new career path, you still need to be looking further ahead into the future, and make your decisions with consideration to how the employment market may change in coming years.

Russo Recruitment general manager Denise Love said while demand in different sectors would fluctuate, the most difficult step for jobseekers would continue to be breaking into the workforce with minimal or no experience.

"There will be smaller employment gains for lower skilled occupations such as sales workers, labourers and machinery operators and drivers," Mrs Love said.

"Still, the most difficult challenges for all jobseekers will continue to be breaking into the labour market with little or no workplace experience."

"This highlights the importance of jobseekers to undertake post-school education and training which contains a work-experience component, to improve their job and career prospects."

"It is so important jobseekers respond positively and take action to improve their employment prospects."

Mrs Love said that regardless of the state of the economy, skills and training would always be the key to securing a job, whether it was a first job or a change of career direction.

"Despite the economic downturn, skills are still the key driver of economic growth, and further training is the first step on the road to professional, financial and personal rewards,"Mrs Love said.

"The right training ensures jobseekers can stay in touch with the job market and can re-enter the workforce with the right skills and attitude."

"Jobseekers must remember that entry level jobs are still a vital first stepping stone to success in the labour market, and employers will continue to place very strong value on employability skills."
